Mastering Journal Publication and Peer Review: Strategies for Success in the Natural and Life Sciences / 26-10-JP-3

 

It is essential for doctoral researchers and scientists to develop an impressive publication record. The publication of high-quality journal articles is imperative to apply for jobs or for research grants, to communicate findings, and to define their reputation in the field. This “publish-or-perish” approach, however, may decrease the quality of the journal articles.
By providing adequate training, it is possible to maintain high quality of publications. Unfortunately, doctoral researchers and scientists often do not receive any formal training to publish journal articles. Instead, they learn the craft of publishing “by doing” and by making mistakes.
Journal articles should be published in order to influence the field – not simply to increase the list of publications. In this workshop, Andrea Sanchini will discuss with you on how to navigate the different steps of publishing and how to deal with the peer review process, increasing the chances of acceptance.

 

•  Big‑picture understanding of the academic publishing field
• Strategic journal selection: learn the key criteria to choose the most suitable journal for your manuscript
• Crafting a compelling cover letter to highlight the novelty and relevance of your work to editors
• Master the peer‑review process from initial submission to revision and final decision, including the different review models
• Giving and receiving feedback across cultures: develop practical skills for constructive criticism and for navigating reviewer/editor communication in German and international contexts
• Identify key ethical issues, e.g. predatory journals, authorship disputes, plagiarism and understand how artificial intelligence could reshape manuscript preparation and review

All workshops are free of charge. Parts of the qualification program are funded by the Berlin University Alliance.

Credits and Work units   
Many doctoral programs award credit points for participation in workshops and other qualification programs. One work unit (WU) corresponds to 45 minutes of workshop time. In some cases they might round up.  

• 8 work units equal 0.5 credit points.  
• For shorter workshops, credits are calculated proportionally based on the work units.  
• Credit transfer requires the accumulation of a sufficient number of work units.
