| European Doctoral Day 2026: Impulse for Starting Your Career in Germany | 13.05.2026 11:00 - 13:00 (Wed) | online | Wichert, Amanda |

This short talk supports students, early-stage researchers, and the public in understanding career options in Germany—within academia and beyond—and in navigating the specific structures of the German job market. The aim is to show possible or necessary next professional steps.
Starting a career in Germany can be challenging. Thinking about next steps can feel overwhelming, and it’s easy to get lost in job postings, advice, and expectations. For researchers in Germany, especially those with international backgrounds, the structure of the system can be difficult to navigate. It can be hard to figure out how to market your experience, both within and beyond academia, and how to translate your skills to the job market. Developing a clearer understanding of your options and the German job market for academics will empower you to make concious choices about your future and to approach your next steps with more confidence.
• What career options are open to me in academia, industry, and beyond in Germany
• What rules and regulations shape the German job market, and how do they affect my choices?
• How can I understand the differences between the German job market and others, and what do employers here look for?
• How can I make sure that moving into my next role—inside or outside academia—feels like a conscious choice?
Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of their career options in Germany, how to navigate the system, and how to make conscious choices about their next steps. They will feel more confident about their ability to make a choice that fits them.
